Questions - Consonants - Test 1
The following test is from an actual examination paper used in Turkish schools for second grade pupils. It asks about their knowledge of vowel harmony by asking about the differences between narrow and wide vowels.
It may help the new Turkish learner to realize the difference between narrow and wide vowels - which is useful in understanding Vowel Harmony Rules.
Before attempting this test we append the following notes from Turkish Grammar for Turkish Schools.
Note: Some of these questions a more difficult than they look, but if you can do the exercise well, then you will understand the Rules of Consonant Mutation.... Good luck..

About Turkish Consonants
Ünsüz harfler 2'ye ayrılır.
Turkish Consonants are divided into two Groups.
(1) Yumuşak ünsüzler: b-c-d-g-ğ-j-l-m-n-r-v-y-z
(1) The Soft Consonants: b-c-d-g-ğ-j-l-m-n-r-v-y-z
(2) Sert ünsüzler: ç-f-t-h-s-k-p-ş
(2) The Hard Consonants: ç-f-t-h-s-k-p-ş
Ünsüz harfler sürekli ve süreksizdir:
Consonants are also grouped as Continuous and Discontinuous:
(1) Süreksiz ünsüzler: p-ç-t-k-b-c-d-g
(1) Discontinuous Consonants: p-ç-t-k-b-c-d-g - [These consonants are a "stop" in speech.]
(2) Sürekli ünsüzler: f-ğ-h-j-l-m-n-r-v-y-z
(2) Continuous Consonants: f-ğ-h-j-l-m-n-r-s-ş-v-y-z - [These consonants can be "extended" in speech.]

Other rules concerned with Turkish Consonants:
(1) Sert ünsüzlerin yumuşaması: (p, ç, t, k) harfleri ile biten bir kelimeden sonra sesli harfle başlayan bir ek geldiğinde (p→b, ç→c, t→d, k→ğ veya g) 'ye dönüşür.
Bu kurala sert ünsüzlerin yumuşaması denir.
(1) Consonant Softening: When a suffix beginning with Vowel is added to words that end in (p, ç, t, k) then the the final consonant takes it soft form - with the following changes: (p→b, ç→c, t→d, k→ğ veya g) - this Rule is called Consonant Softening
(2) Ünsüzlerin benzeşmesi: ç, f, t, h, s, k, p, ş harfleri ile biten bir kelimeden sonra b-c-d-g- harfleriyle başlayan ekler geldiğinde bu harfler sertleşir. Türkçede b ünsüzü ile başlayan bir ek olmadığı için sayılmaz.
Bu kurala ünsüzlerin benzeşmesi denir.
(2) Consonant Assimilation: If a suffix beginning with a soft consonant (c-d-g) is added to a word whose final consonant is hard (ç, f, t, h, s, k, p, ş) then the suffix will take its hard form with the following changes (c→ç, d→t, g→k).
[Note that turkish does not have a suffix which begins with letter "b" , so this letter can be disregarded for this rule]. This rule is called Consonant Assimilation.

(1) - There are eight hard consonants in the Turkish alphabet, the rest are soft consonants.
(2) - Both hard consonants and soft consonants can be categorized as continuous or diccontinuous due to the quality of the sound expelled.
 Single Syllable Word Roots
The general rule is that single syllable words do not soften their final hard consonants in line with the general rule. But there are exceptions - some do....
